Children in Year 2 start each term with a new topic which begins with a Wow Factor experience and ends with a Fantastic Finish. Children will enjoy books throughout each topic, with two that they will become very familiar with. The unit plans set out how subjects are woven throughout the topic.
Curriculum Overview
Autumn- London's Burning
Sensational Start: Fire Service Visit/ Visit to the Library
Fantastic Finish: Recreating the Great Fire of London
The children will begin by learning about where London is in relation to Luton. They will then learn about what it was like to live in London in 1666. Children will find out facts about the Great Fire of London, its significance and what happened afterwards, using a range of sources. They will write their own diary entries, after exploring Samuel Pepys's diary.
Later in the term, the children will visit the local library and hope to be visited by
Mr Brand, who is our local Enid Blyton expert. Through reading The Faraway Tree and The Famous Five series of books, children will enter the world of adventure and mystery. They will learn about the life and works of this well-known author and will look at the development of books and information by researching the achievements of William Caxton and Tim Berners-Lee.
After making Tudor houses from cardboard boxes, we will finish the topic by recreating the Great Fire of London.
Spring- Explorers
Sensational Start: Freshwater Theatre Company - Columbus & Armstrong / Zakariya Masjid Mosque Visit
Fantastic Finish: Explorers Day
Children begin the topic with a Columbus and Armstrong Drama Workshop from the Freshwater Theatre Company. They will learn about different types of exploration and famous explorers, including Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. The geography focus is on naming and locating on a world map, the oceans and continents and learning about compass directions. In Design Technology, the children will get to design a wrap for an explorer to take on an expedition. The topic will end with an Explorers Day where the children can dress up as their favourite explorer.
Summer - A Suitable Habitat
Sensational Start: Teaching Talons Worshop/ Southend on Sea Visit
Fantastic Finish: Seaside from the Past day/ Camping at the school Residential
Children will learn about a wide range of habitats and the animals that live in them. They will begin to consider how they are suited to their habitat and create their own ‘Just So’ stories telling tales of real and imagined adaptations. There will be a focus on nocturnal animals inspired by a bird of prey workshop and the story ‘The Owl Who Was Afraid Of The Dark’. The fantastic finish will be making a bug hotel and going on a habitat hunt.
Later in term, children will get to visit Southend, where they will spend time on the beach, building sandcastles and exploring the pier. In Geography they will compare hot and cold parts of the world and in History, they will research seaside holidays in the past and how they have changed.
