Children in Reception start each half term with a new topic which begins with a Sensational Start and ends with a Fantastic Finish. Children will enjoy books throughout each topic, with two that they will become very familiar with. The book webs set out how subjects are woven throughout the topic.

Autumn 1 - Light and Dark

Sensational Start: Owl Flight in the Hall

Fantastic Finish: Dark Disco

Children will have the opportunity to see an owl in flight to start off this exciting topic. They will learn the difference between light and dark and begin to understand why we have shadows. Children will explore sources of light and materials that reflect light or glow in the dark. The end of the topic will be celebrated with a dark disco – bring your glow sticks!

Autumn 2 - Celebrations

Sensational Start: Party Planning

Fantastic Finish: Party

Children will learn about celebrations significant to a range of cultures and religions. They will look at personal celebrations such as birthdays and weddings as well as annual celebrations such as Eid-al-Fitr, Diwali, Christmas and Bonfire Night. The children will plan their own party, writing and sending invitations and writing lists of things they will need. They will then host their own party at the end of the topic.

Spring 1 - Colours

Sensational Start: Colour Dash

Fantastic Finish: Art Exhibition

This topic begins with a colour dash, where children run through a shower of brightly coloured powder. The children will engage in exploring colour mixing and investigating coloured filters and lights. They will securely name the colours and create works of art both big and small. The colourful art will be exhibited to parents at the end of the topic.

Spring 2 - Dinosaurs Roar!

Sensational Start: Gulliver's Land - Dinosaur and Farm Visit

Fantastic Finish: Dinosaur Excavation Day

A step back in time to the mesozoic era is the focus for this topic on dinosaurs. It will begin with a visit to Gulliver’s Land Dinosaur and Farm Park to appreciate the size of these creatures, spark their interest in dinosaurs and have fun. Through this topic children will learn about different types of dinosaurs, what they ate and where they lived. They will finish the topic with a day as a palaeontologist excavating dinosaur bones.

Summer 1 - Lost in Space

Sensational Start: Junk Modelling Day

Fantastic Finish: Rocket Races

The possibilities are endless when it comes to a simple box. In the story ‘Whatever Next’ Baby Bear finds himself flying to the moon! Children will begin the topic with a junk modelling day. They will learn about space and how to travel to space and considering what it might be like to live in space. The children will finish the topic with rocket races using rockets that they have made themselves.

Summer 2 - Down on the Farm

Sensational Start: Willows Activity Farm Visit

Fantastic Finish: Planting Day

Children will have the opportunity to visit Willows Activity Farm where they will meet Peter Rabbit as well as see, feed and hold a range of farm animals. Through the stories ‘The Pig in the Pond’ and ‘Farmer Duck’ they will learn more about the animals that live on the farm, products that are grown on a farm and the job of a farmer. They will finish the topic with a day of planting their own crops.
